Ready?
Cruise line companies should not be getting bailouts. Fuck them. Giant floating cities that pollute more than actual cites. These hotbeds of disease should be banished from the earth.

:) it’s something to consider, but I’m with you. Cruises are silly to me, and pollute more than a bazillion rush hours.

Someone pointed out how all of the ships fly foreign flags to avoid taxes and minimum wage laws.

Fun story, nox is a global cooling agent (binds to atmospheric methane) and global shipping (including cruises) are believed to be net global coolers as it removes more greenhouse effect than it adds.

I’ve never seen the appeal. Meanwhile, a coworker of mine decided not to cancel a scheduled cruise, well after all of this started. He now has 3 weeks off instead of 1...

People of Walmart

beyond my comprehension.

Fine by me. My idea of a vacation is to go somewhere and do something on my terms. Not to be stuck on a floating cesspool with thousands of others.

So you’re saying that my TDI does not only emit less C02 than a comparable gasoline powered car but also helps fight global warming because of all the NOx?

I’m a big fan, but not the way its been done. I don’t want to take a vacation on a giant floating apartment block, wedged in line for fast food with a bunch of sweaty fat guys in sleeveless shirts.
The older style - smaller and more tastefully designed ships with lower passenger density/higher crew:passenger ratio, less amenities, but higher quality food and service that didn’t nickel and dime you for extras? Yeah, I’d take that. Viking Ocean and Oceania are pretty much the only ones still like that.
For what you’d pay to stay at an equivalent hotel (airfare to/from, ground transportation, nightly room rate, 3 meals a day, any other entertainment) on land, its the best vacation value that exists.
Also, these companies are publicly traded. Most of us are invested in them through our 401ks and 403bs, and the bulk of their shoreside employees are in the US. Though, I do have little sympathy in general for shipping companies that flag overseas to avoid taxes, livable wages, and regs, then want to appeal to the US and other 1st world states for help and protection. Flag of convenience countries like Panama, Malta, and Liberia do not take proper responsibility for what is legall y their sovereign territory floating around the world.

Good take in my opinion. Especially since they are generally happy to use foreign holding companies and flags of convenience to avoid US jurisdiction whenever it suits them.

Bailout on the terms that every new ship that comes online from now on gets much more efficient propulsion systems.
Give ‘em the money, but keep the strings attached.
ETA: They must fuel up in the US, with fuel sourced from the US.

These dullard abominations only exist because people have money to spend. Those who already have plenty to spend should keep on spending it. Those who need help should get help.

They're really sleazy companies too. Doing weird things and not registering in the States to avoid paying employees and taxes. We shouldnt bail them out. And if we bail out Boeing, the public should own them.

No good reason to own Boeing long term, but I agree that if we have to bail them out we should wipe out the current shareholders and then do an IPO for “new Boeing .” to recoup some of our losses from the bailout.

You skipped quite a bit there. NOx is highly reactive and forms products with both cooling and warming effects. The NOx from ships can form hydoxyl radicals, which do oxidize methane. However, it also forms tropospheric ozone (greenhouse gas and pollutant) acid rain (indirect greenhouse effect and pollutant) and a few carcinogenic compounds.
The paper I read that claimed ships were net coolers was conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development which ain’t exactly a scientific organization. It was also just an eight page analysis.
I doubt too many atmospheric scientists would consider them net coolers, especially when you look at everything outside of emissions.

NOx also produces greenhouse gases, and is more likely to do so over land than water. Also the whole acid rain and smog thing.

Bail them out, but they have to take all the old s on a year long quarantine cruise so the rest of us can back to our lives.

Its an elective surgery. Not necessary, like a major transportation system necessary to everyday commerce such as trucking, trains, airlines. Cruise liners don't do shit but travel a great circle and drop off who they picked up. No contribution to commerce, purely for fleecing customers.

Personally, I’d take a warmer earth over acid rain and increased ozone in my breathing air. There are pollutant control devices used to take NOx out of emissions. One really cool one involves the use of algae, which also pull CO2 out of the atmosphere.

Im also a huge proponent of focusing the next wave of environmental controls being industrial processes and global shipping.

Oh absolutely not long term. That would be awful. And would probably end up like that weird public transit problem where they privatize the gains and the people take the losses.
